Welcome at my website!
My name is Geertjan Aleven, I am a dutch singer songwriter. I write, record and perform poetic, introspective acoustic folk. Songs for lovers of nature and for walkers of the inner path. There is often a calming quality to my songs. While performing live, I have often noticed people reconnecting with their inner selves, closing their eyes while listening.
It’s the songwriters of the late sixties and the seventies that inspire me most. Paul Simon for example, for his craftsmanship. John Lennon for his honesty. Jony Mitchell for her poetry. Jim Croce for his soulful vulnerability. John Denver for his sincerity. To name but a few.
Trying to blend words, thoughts, feelings, melodies, instrumentation, sounds, voice into beautiful song-wholes and performing this for people is just such a deep joy to me. In recent years I have combined my songs with storytelling in ‘When the trees called the rain’, a storytelling concert about our human relationship with nature. Can we embrace nature once more, and in doing so can we embrace our own human nature? For it’s nature that holds so many solutions to climate change, if only we allow it to thrive. Our fate and nature's fate is intertwined.
Currently I am working on creating a musical keynote about the inner development goals (IDG's). Through performing I have experienced many times now that combining songs and stories is a powerful combination that has the potential to touch the hearts of people and that by doing so, helps bring forth meaningful change.
In December 2024, I released a Christmas song called May every heart heal this Christmas time. I tried to write that ‘other’ Christmas song, I tried to capture what I see as the meaning of Christmas. And then, in November 2025 I released my latest song The Pain. It's a song about that moment when we do not see the light at all. This experience is very much part of our life. Maybe we don't like to be reminded of that. But, if we are to thrive as human beings, we have to find our way to embrace that inner pain and heal it.
You can listen to all the music I released right here on my website, or online on the usual platforms. Enjoy!
